Led Zeppelin was to the 1970s what the Beatles were to the 1960s: a band so popular and creative that they ended up establishing the prism through which their whole era was seen. Zeppelin ushered in the eras of album rock (they refused to release singles from their albums even when they were getting a lot of radio play) and arena rock (they played bigger and bigger venues as their ticket sales soared).

Other bands competed in the same arena, but Led Zeppelin created a distinct mystery via enigmatic album covers, a lack of press coverage, and, of course, their music. Zeppelin produced a gigantic roar in their early days, drawing on postwar electric blues, early rock & roll, and psychedelia, but they weren’t only heavy.
