Jane’s Addiction is an American rock band that was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. They are known for their eclectic sound and the lead singer Perry Farrell.

Jane’s Addiction, a Los Angeles-based alternative rock band, was one of the most influential and famous bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s. They were hotly followed when they initially appeared in the mid-’80s and went on to produce two seminal albums before disbanding in 1991.

Following reunions produced further attempts, and they maintained their cult status far into the 2000s. Jane’s Addiction played a hybrid of rock music, combining metal with punk, folk, and jazz. Flamboyant frontman Perry Farrell, formerly of the band Psi Com, had an undeniable charisma and an interest in provocative art (he designed the band’s album covers), and Jane’s Addiction played a hybrid of rock music, combining metal with punk, folk, and jazz.

The band, which included Farrell, Eric Avery on bass, Stephen Perkins on drums, and Dave Navarro on guitar, had previously issued their first album, a live recording from the Roxy in Hollywood. After winning the bidding battle, Warner Bros. released Nothing’s Shocking in 1988.

Jane’s Addiction’s harsh sound and confrontational attitude (exemplified by the nude sculpture on the cover) met with considerable opposition, but the album eventually found a following, spending 35 weeks on the charts. Ritual de lo Habitual, released in 1990, was the band’s commercial breakthrough, charting in the Top 20 and earning gold certification. As a farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction, Farrell created the Lollapalooza mobile rock festival.

The group disbanded when the tour ended at the end of the summer of 1991. For the next few years, Farrell was engaged in the organizing of the annual Lollapalooza event; he also founded Porno for Pyros with Perkins in 1992, and released their first album the following year. Navarro joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the end of 1993 after a number of quiet years, which included creating Deconstruction with Avery, a band that didn’t release any albums until 1994.

Kettle Whistle Perkins and Farrell had disbanded Porno for Pyros by 1997, while Navarro was on the verge of leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers. A Jane’s Addiction reunion tour was announced for the autumn of the same year, when Navarro started performing with his two old bandmates again during Porno for Pyros’ last tour. The only catch was that Avery was replaced by Chili Peppers bassist Flea (Avery refused to participate, as he concentrated on his new band, Polar Bear).

The freshly reformed Jane’s Addiction released the album Kettle Whistle to coincide with the brief tour, which included legendary live performances and demos with a few newly recorded songs. Although the record did not sell well, the reunion tour was a huge success. However, it did not result in a permanent re-formation, since individuals went their own ways once it was completed.

A planned film documentary of the reunion tour never materialized, but in 1999, a best-of collection named Rev. Farrell was released, chronicling Farrell’s work (with Jane’s, Porno, and a few new solo songs). Song Yet to Be Sung, his first solo full-length, was released in 2001.

Trust No One, Navarro’s first solo album, was released a month before Farrell’s, coincidentally the same year that another Jane’s Addiction reunion was planned. Former Porno for Pyros bassist Martyn Lenoble took Avery’s place when he again declined to participate.

Strays Jane’s Addiction prepared to do it all over again a few years later. Farrell, Navarro, and Perkins went back into the studio in mid-2002 to record their first new album in almost a decade. Chris Chaney (Tommy Lee, Alanis Morissette) joined the band as a bass player, and Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Kiss, Aerosmith) agreed to produce the next album. While Capitol prepared for the July 2003 release of Strays, Farrell revived Lollapalooza after a six-year hiatus.

(One) Around 2004, Jane’s Addiction announced their breakup for the second time, and the members started working on other music projects. The Panic Channel, which included Navarro, Perkins, Chaney, and singer Steve Isaacs, formed in 2006 and released the album (One).

Navarro also co-hosted the CBS reality music competition Rock Star: Supernova in 2006, in which candidates competed for the position of lead vocalist for a supergroup including drummer Tommy Lee, bassist Jason Newsted, and guitarist Gilby Clarke. The Panic Channel and Supernova toured together in early 2007. Meanwhile, Farrell and his wife, Etty Lau Farrell, created the Satellite Party with former Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, and released the album Ultra Payloaded in 2007.

A Cabinet of Curiosities Jane’s Addiction reformed in 2008, this time with the original lineup, including bassist Avery, who hadn’t played with the band since 1991. The band immediately re-recorded two songs, “Whores” and “Chip Away,” which had never been formally recorded in a studio, and went on tour with Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails. In 2009, the deluxe box set A Cabinet of Curiosities was released. In 2010, Avery announced his departure from the band, and former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan took his place.

McKagan was first brought on as a temporary member, but he eventually joined on as a full-time member, and the band started working on new songs. Jane’s Addiction debuted the song “Soulmate” at a Cinco de Mayo performance in Hollywood in May of 2010, with McKagan on bass.

McKagan departed the band the next year, and was replaced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, who also featured on the band’s fourth full studio album, The Great Escape Artist, released in 2011. Chris Chaney joined Jane’s Addiction for the support tour for The Great Escape Artist and remained with the band for the following several years, performing semi-regularly at concerts and festivals.

The Sterling Spoon Anniversary Tour, which commemorated the anniversaries of Lollapalooza and Ritual de lo Habitual, was started by Jane’s Addiction in 2016. Sterling Spoon, a vinyl box set, was produced to coincide with the tour.
